Sound Only

AssignmentSound Effects Story 3.5 stars

Assignment Description: “Tell a story using nothing but sound effects. There can be no verbal communication, only sound effects. Use at least five different sounds that you find online. The story can be no longer than 90 seconds.”

Not Playing Nice: My background with editing audio is exactly zero. However, I guess thats what this class is all about.  I need to learn how to use brand new types of media to incorporate in my blog posts. I knew going into this assignment that it was not going to be a piece of cake for me.  I played around with Audacity and Free Sound for a little while before I started my assignment.   In order to include my western character, I decided to do a story about one of his sales.

Words for Sounds: These sounds are depicting one of Dr.Wisdom’s sales. The whole scene takes place in a bar. This is shown by the chattering in the background. He starts off by crushing up some of his teeth for a customer.  You then hear his boots as he travels over to the sink.  He turns on the faucet and washed off the crushed up teeth, in order to eliminate all of the dirt. You can then hear him exchanging a friendly laugh with his customer.  What a nice salesman! Finally, the cash register rings to show his sale.

Process, Annotated: This process was a lot harder for me than I expected it to be. I knew absolutely nothing about audacity, but now I would like to say that I know quite a bit more! I started off by using Free Sound to find all of the individual sounds I used in the clip. These sounds included running water, male laughter, chattering teeth, cash register, small town bar, and boots on floor. At first, I couldn’t figure out how to put audio clips one after another instead of having them play at the same time. However, after a little bit of searching and manual reading, I figured out it was just an easy copy and paste! Because I first used two sounds playing at the same time on accident, I figured it would be a cool idea to layer a bar noise in the background.  I turned the volume down on the bar sounds so that it sounded like it was quiet background noise. Once it was all complete, I saved the file as one mp3 and I uploaded it to SoundCloud in order to embed it in the post.
